Vocational Technical Scholarship
These scholarships are
awarded to high school students pursuing higher education in technical
professions in engineering, communications, and computer science. This
is a $1400 scholarship, awarded in $700 increments for a two year
degree, with $1400 available should the student continue on to a four
year program in AFCEA related fields.
The award was initiated in 1986 to encourage continuing education for
para-professionals. It is named for Barbara A. Fisher, a long time
dedicated volunteer of the Chapter, and its first woman Chapter
President, who earned $1000 annually for eight years for volunteer
efforts to the Chapter from GTE Corporation’s Volunteer Initiatives

Dr. Walter
S. McAfee Scholarship
These
scholarships are awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements by
deserving minority high school seniors pursuing a college degree
relating to communications, computer science or electronics, in
preparation for a career in science or engineering. This is a $2800
scholarship, awarded in $700 increments. Selection is based on academic
standing, extra curricular activities, and contribution to the
community.
The scholarships are given in honor and memory of Dr. Walter S. McAfee,
a distinguished black scientist, who retired in 1985, after serving as
Scientific Advisor to the U.S. Army Electronics Research and Development
Command. During his career, Dr. McAfee achieved worldwide acclaim while
leading the theoretical study group, which made history by establishing
the first radar contact with the moon. The Chapter is assisted by the
Zeta Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, who selects
the recipients.
